Situated in the Da Shu District of Kaohsiung, Fo Guang Shan used to be a barren mountain. After ten years or so, it has become Taiwan’s only ten directional forest. The architecture of the temple is solemn and grand, but also very modern. It is a holy land filled with Buddhist culture. Fo Guang Shan is made up of 5 little mountains, and there are also many buildings. The Big Buddha City on the first mountain has the tallest Buddha statue in Southeast Asia, with a height of over 120 meters. The second mountain has the pure land cave. It is a building filled with cultural and educational value, and it was built for Master Hsin Yun who promotes world Buddhism and creation of a pure land, for the purposes of caring for humanity and literature, cleansing society and human hearts. The third mountain contains a palace-like building, Da Bei Palace, which is situated on the Western Mountain of Fo Guang Shan. Here a 20 foot Guanyin is worshipped. The walls are surrounded by 12 solemn and holy statues of Guanyin. The fourth mountain has the wisdom garden and educational park for pilgrims. The fifth mountain has a nursing home for elders. There is also a thousand hectare Path of Buddhahood which can contain 30,000 people. The area is around 3500 square meters, and the height of the palace is about 100 feet. Sakyamuni, Amida, and Medicine Buddhas are worshipped here. The holiness cannot be described in words. The architecture has an ancient palace and modern civilization feel to it. It integrates culture, education, Buddhist teaching, charity, pilgrimage, and tourism, with the spirit and concept of the world as a pure land.
