The Zuoying Confucius Temple, Kaohsiung, stands just outside the former north gate of old Zuoying City, to the north-west of Lotus Lake. It was founded rather early, in the 23rd year of the Kangxi Emperor (1684), and renovated during the reigns of both the Qianlong and Guangxu Emperors. Under Japanese rule, the temple was transformed into a campus. Of the original buildings, only the Tsung shrine was preserved. The present buildings were constructed in an imitation Song style, and to a configuration slightly adapted from the design of the Confucius temple in the sage’s former hometown of Qufu, Shandong province. These renovations were completed in 1976, and the temple today covers more than 1,800 square feet, making it the largest Confucius Temple in Taiwan.
